Binary package hint: linux-restricted-modules-generic

Ubuntu 8.04, both 32 and 64 bit

Standard process of upgrading to new kernel doesn't work: kernel image
has been upgraded all right, but these packages:

linux-generic
linux-image-generic
linux-restricted-modules-generic

won't upgrade due to some dependencies. The result is that I can start
with new kernel, but sound driver and Nvidia driver and probably others
are missing, therefore I get screen resolution 800x600 max, no sound
etc. Completely useless. Got to return to old kernel (2.6.24.28.30).

I'm checking the "security vulnerability" checkbox bellow, since I don't
know whether 2.6.24.29.31 upgrade contains security bugfixes; if yes,
its inapplicability probably is a security problem.

** Affects: linux-meta (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
