The guide was very informative, unfortunately I had already been through that one a couple times with no results. Thank you though for pointing me somewhere other than the help.ubuntu sound problems page that seems to be the default "start here so we can ignore you" answer for sound issues.
I installed a new sound card to get sound up and running, but never was able to get my VT1720/24 working. Sorry I didn't follow through with my post, but launchpad is somewhat of a joke, so I don't bother posting here anymore.
