I have this same model of laptop (I also noted that the internal
subwoofer did not shut off with a headphone plugged in). The issue did
not exist in 10.04 (amd64), but does in 10.10 (amd64) even at the latest
revision as of this writing. I did figure out a work-around for my
particular scenario.

Append this line to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf:
options snd-hda-intel model=asus-mode7

This makes the speakers, subwoofer, and audio jack act as you'd expect
in all the scenarios mentioned. I'll test the latest natty build when I
get a chance.
