Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I have a dual head AGP card running two monitors on a xinelerra setup.

I wanted a third monitor, so I added an older PCI graphics card (a late
90s matrox something or other). The text mode bootup ran off the AGP
without problems; just before it got to launching X, I saw a message
about the xorg.conf being backed up and a new one put in place.

Then X kicked into action, and both of my AGP monitors just displayed
fuzzy nonsense. I tried to drop out to text mode, but the display was
somehow completely wrecked.

I am about to reinstall so that I can get back to a working
configuration. I consider the bug here that xorg overwrote my working
xorg.conf without asking me whether it should, and also that it used
completely incorrect settings (presumably it was trying to address the
PCI in preference to the AGP -- my bios says that AGP comes first, so x
should either have picked up on that, or made no assumption at all.)

** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Untriaged
         Status: Unconfirmed
