Before updating to the kernels, this workaround was able to mount the sd card:
1) Create file: /etc/modprobe.d/mmc_fix.conf 
2) Add line to mmc_fix.conf: "options sdhci debug_quirks=0x40"
3) reboot

Updating to kernel 2.6.35-28.49 available in maverick-proposed updates
does not work, however updating to the lp730820r1 kernel does allow a sd
card to mount automatically.
