Thanks Niran for this clarification.  Now I understand better what the
problem is.

But still, my comment is the following:  If, for any reason, an
application can't use the (new) indicator-applet system and still relies
on the (old) notification area applet, this should work well with Natty
(or at least, if it doesn't work out of the box, user should have the
option to add the notification area to the upper bar).  I suspect that
there are still various useful applications that have not made the
switch to the indicator-applet system...  In other words,
users/developers need a transition period.
