Why not just modify the cube to work like the KDE Cube does?
In KDE you can switch to a workspace using the expo equivalent if you want, or
you can switch to lower workspaces (for example in a 2x2 or 4x4 grid) with the
Cube. It just shows an animation going up or down when switching to a lower
workspace.

With a bit of tweaking the compiz cube could easily do this, not so? (I
have not yet looked at the code, so I might be wrong? If it is a simple
fix, I would even take a stab at it :-P
