I have seen this bug several times on a brand new Core i3 540 HP system. I see messages like these in the dmesg log:
[239983.083606] [drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... GPU hung [239983.083616] render error detected, EIR: 0x00000000 [239983.083639] [drm:i915_do_wait_request] *ERROR* i915_do_wait_request returns -5 (awaiting 64239677 at 64239676) When the GPU "hangs" I can still CTRL-ALT-F1 and login. Sometimes a simple service gdm restart is enough to get me back to work, sometimes I have to hard-reset the machine. DIM data about the machine follows: Handle 0x0001, DMI type 1, 27 bytes System Information Manufacturer: Hewlett-Packard Product Name: HP Elite 7100 Microtower PC Version: xxx0204GRxxxxxxxx0 Serial Number: CZC0366WYL UUID: 7885EB66-DABC-DF11-BC09-BDEB2F91D1F8 Wake-up Type: Power Switch SKU Number: WU394EA#ABZ Family: 103C_53307F CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i3 CPU 540 @ 3.07GHz RAM: 2x2GB modules.
