I applied the command as described with the following result:
sudo system@generator:~$ sudo apt-get clean
[sudo] password for system:
system@generator:~$
I then proceeded to Update Manager, which also had some queued updates
and ran the program. Much was done but there was a problem notification
at the end.....
1/ an Information box appeared....:

OK, if you need any other info to follow through, just let me know. I
doubt I will read my email for another 24 hours, as I have to work
tomorrow. After that I will check at least a couple of times a day.
