Even though I could not get any of the tune2fs commands to work, I tried the
other debugging command:
sudo sh -c "sync; echo 1 > /sys/power/pm_trace; pm-suspend"
The strange thing is it suspended perfectly with this command (tried it 3
times). When I tried to suspend from the menu in "Indicator Applet Session" or
the power button the bug would manifest. I tried these in kernel
2.6.35-27-generic and kernel 2.6.35-22-generic.
So I am not able to get a debugging trace, but the fact that the bug manifests
from the gnome UI and power button might throw some light.
