Yes, I believe the 2nd click on the application place should toggle it closed. This would be the same behavior as the workspace switcher (which is located right above it) and the ubuntu icon..
I suppose my reason for wanting this behavior, is that there is no other obvious way to close the application place with the mouse, when it launches fullscreen.
