Without wanting to add unnecessary noise to a closed bug, I just wanted to note that I still see this issue with a Ubuntu 10.04.2 install, freshly updated on 18th March 2011.
I have udev 151-12.3 installed. With udev running I see this bug. If I turn udev off[1] then I can mount my usb hdd OK. So I think this issue is present in udev 151-12.3.
