I cannot confirm this.  I've just cleanly installed the latest
(0.9.2.1-2.1ubuntu2) repository version of democracyplayer, and I get
both sound and video (on AMD64).

Could you try removing your previous democracyplayer configuration, and
go with a fresh database, config, etc?  To do that, simply move the
.democracy folder somewhere else (for example "mv ~/.democracy
~/democracy-backup")
