Fabio, I don't know why it happens this way.
However, it is not the first time that I experiment this kind of problem after 
UPGRADING (I had upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10).
In fact, it also happened when upgrading from 9.04 to 9.10: the fact that 
almost all of the system had been upgraded except the kernel caused this Xorg 
problem described here:

Now, I just installed the "linux" package from Synaptic. I will write
back after restarting the system. See you in a while... hope the system
will restart properly!
