Hi David, Essentially how it works currently is that is watching for a sink input event. This happens when a client application starts to output audio to the device output (sink). If the service (which drives the menu) sees that a new sink input has the correct media.role. then it will show the microphone. When it sees that same sink input be removed then it removes the mic slider.
So to answer your question above you would need to run a service which has a sink input with the appropriate role set. I cannot see how this would break anything.
