I can confirm that the instructions mentioned by William Scheidegger
(thanks a lot !!!)  in post #334 work after updating the kernel to
2.6.35-28.

$ lspci -vnn | grep -A 1 Wireless

On the other hand, just using the 
"linux-backports-modules-compat-wireless-2.6.37-2.6.35-28-generic" package did 
improve the download speeds at all.

Therefore I had to compile and install the latest compat-wireless drivers from  
:   
http://wireless.kernel.org/download/compat-wireless-2.6/compat-wireless-2011-03-26.tar.bz2
