The bug is actually in parted, specifically in dmraid.patch.  This
Ubuntu patch tries to identify dmraid partitions and remove them from
the list of disks that parted generates.  It incorrectly identifies the
raid10 device as a partition and so removes it from the list.

I have started a discussion on the dm-devel mailing list about a proper
way to differentiate between the whole disk device and partition
devices.
