Yeah, what that sounds like is Ye Olde direct rendering non-indirection bug #96991. Or maybe not; I'd need to see what you're seeing to be sure. But check the screenshots on that bug to see if it matches.
Well, I recently put in a fix to xserver which solved a bug with improperly drawn menus which we think fixed a few other issues, and perhaps that improved the situation here too. Let's give it a few more days to see if you happen to see it again and can take a picture.
