Public bug reported:

Ubuntu needs to improve and revamp its default Appearance theme.

A major weakness of Ubuntu is its lack of a well integrated and refined
Appearance Theme. Much like the creation of the beautiful Ubuntu Font,
Ubuntu needs to develop its own unique, fully-integrated Appearance
Theme. The current lack of integration and bug-free presentation of the
theme across applications impacts user enjoyment and use. For example,
even with the default 10.04 LTS appearance theme of Ambiance, Mozilla
Thunderbird and Mozilla Firefox don't correctly display menu items
because the theme is too dark and obscures the lettering (please see
attached image for a visual example). This is disappointing, but this
sort of problem is prevalent throughout Ubuntu. One of the keys to
Microsoft's success with Windows is that it has a fully-integrated and
consistent Appearance Theme that all applications adopt. In addition,
Ubuntu needs a default Theme that is not as dark. It needs to have more
light in it, not be so drab. It also needs to do a better job to clearly
contrast active and inactive windows. There are too many areas in Ubuntu
where it is difficult to differentiate from an active tab and an
inactive tab. With most themes, the tabs practically have the same
appearance whether active or inactive. A better job needs to be done in
"greying out" inactive tabs so as to better differentiate them from the
"lit up" active tab in an application. There needs to be more contrast
and better gradation of color throughout. It is these kinds of
improvements that will dramatically improve the recognition, use, and
enjoyment of Ubuntu.
