I've have the same problem since a kernel update in 10.10 (don't know which one 
sadly).
The soundcard is recognized without errors but any try to play sound fails 
(e.g. in the "test speakers" window in the sound preferences).

The problem is still there after upgrading to 11.04 beta and even with
the 11.04 beta live cd.
