Should also note that a similar problem had been occurring with a
different sound card (different symptoms but same "returned a value that
is exceptionally large" message) several months ago. Switching to the
card I use now solved that problem and sound has been working fine until
it crashed a few days ago and again today, both while playing video in
VLC.
