Weird, we have had that discussion before:
Users want a warning message (bug 308690, bug 512669, about [shift-]deleting 
messages), developers don't like the nagging message, so in the end, nothing 
happens. But users lose out, and lose their data, sometimes without even 
noticing.-
The obvious solution to such problems is customizability! Here, implement the 
confirmation and add an "Don't show this again" checkbox. Yes, it's work, and 
yes, it may need more UI elsewhere, but undo just doesn't provide the same 
level of safety.

Furthermore, as has been said before, and ignored so far, I find it
difficult to imagine that somebody would regularly delete more than a
few individual contacts.
