I see the same problem with Maverick amd64 and the ATI fglrx driver:
text and graphical elements inside windows are badly distorted, to the
point that they're unusable.  Sometimes moving a window will cause it to
be re-rendered correctly (temporarily), but it's not consistent.

I have read that disabling the fglrx driver fixes the problem, but that
makes the computer useless for flight simulation or other high-framerate
activities.
