Public bug reported:

I don't know what is really the package with problem, but this bug
affects all the desktops which are installed alongside Ubuntu itself
(Gnome with Unity). When we start a desktop which is not Ubuntu with
Gnome, there is a terminal window opening together, and the sound is
off. Running Gnome-Alsamixer, I see that the "Speaker" slider is in the
bottom. This affects Xfce, LXDE and KDE.
