Finally, made it into work to check the banshee re-installation and I found that everything seems to be working fine. My guess at this point is that there was a package/library associated with the "banshee- official-plugins" that was getting in the way. I'm not sure when this package was installed, but it was apparently never removed with subsequent upgrades.
