Got the mistake: in the network-manager, the wireless network was
deactivated (nm-applet -> wireless network). This is a bit confusing, as
my BIOS-setting allows the hardware switch to do several things
(de/activate bluetooth, wireless and WWAN) and ubuntu seems to overwrite
this setting.

Anyway, I'm changing this to "invalid" as the mistake obviously was in
OSI layer 8.
