I have the same problem on Dell Inspiron 1525 (Intel GMA X3100) and Ubuntu Maverick (10.10):
cat /proc/acpi/video/VID/LCD/brightness levels: 12 24 36 48 60 72 84 100 current: 60 Most of the time you can't go directly from 72 to 60 etc. Brightness usually jumps by 24. Though sometimes it increases or decreases by 12 as it should always do. It's very inconsistent and hard to guess what logic stands behind such behavior. Please help to fix this silly bug if you can.
