I just had this problem on my Kubuntu 10.10 I tried to run with live cds: Ubuntu 10.10 and Helix 3.1. These live cds also didn't detect my LAN card. Problem solved after I unplugged the power bar, then I plugged it again, turned on the computer. The LAN card finally detected.
