Well there is a known bug that is being worked on for natty at the moment. It does indeed cause a crash dialog to come up in the middle of an update. Though, as long as you dont click "cancel" or "report bug", the update will continue to install properly. Your packages were probably installed correctly. Can you get update-manager to crash anymore? If so, running it in a terminal and crashing it, then pasting the crash output here would be a great help. Thanks.
