Thanks for reporting this bug Neil, I think it will be fixed soon. I *guess*
this bug happens because you have installed two conflicting Python versions.
If you're familiar with Synaptic package manager or aptitude, search for python
and check which Python versions you have installed. Remove all old versions of
Python. (I don't know Lucid's default version...)
I repackaged PackageKit completely, so installing a new version of the
PackageKit packaging or upgrading to Natty or Maverick should fix this too.
(Although this might not be an option for you...)
