Setting the monitor sync ranges did nothing.  What did work was deleting
the xorg.conf file and letting X regenerate it.  After that, the screen
was at 1280x1024 but the screen resolution app said 1440xsomething and
the some gnome-panel apps were off the screen.  After changing that to
1280x1024, it is perfect.
