I did have libxine1-ffmpeg installed (1.1.4-2ubuntu3), but not
libxine1-plugins

So I've tried installing the latter, which has now added:
libxine1-console (1.1.4-2ubuntu3)
libxine1-gnome (1.1.4-2ubuntu3)
libxine1-kde (1.1.4-2ubuntu3)
libxine1-plugins (1.1.4-2ubuntu3)
to my system.  But still no audio.  And I'm having some crashes and lockups, 
similar to Bill Hind, though I'm inclined to agree that's a separate bug.
