I dont't use proprietary driver. I use xserver-xorg-video-ati 6.6.3-2ubuntu4. When I booted up tu ubunto today I found an update for this driver - version 6.6.3-2ubuntu6. So I will try to repeat this screen server issue with this updated driver.
