For me what helped was to re-create my home directory. Unfortunately I don't know specific files or directories that need to be removed for unity to start working. I suggest you back up your home folder, create an empty directory instead of it, copy files from /etc/skel to your new home directory, then after unity starts working, move things back. You will need to reconfigure your session, but well, that shouldn't be such a big deal.
