Well, for that specific case I updated dpkg with another package manager. I don't use Ubuntu anymore, but I still have my old Ubuntu installation available on a spare machine at work, so I can boot it up and see if update manager exhibits the same behaviour with another package. Would that be useful? Can you reproduce it? The backtrace is fairly informative, I think the bug should be easy to spot.
