The navigation pane is unnecessary, wasteful, and ugly. All of its
features can be implemented via other means. For Current Activity there
could be a panel that appears at the bottom or the top when stuff is
going on with a progressbar for overall progress and a button to expand
the view. History and 3rd party repositories can have buttons in the
main view. The button for 3rd party repositories will bring up a list of
repositories that are displayed in a similar fashion to sub-categories
of packages.

In any case, the reasons for the criticism are valid and there are
available solutions that solve all of the issues raised in opposition in
a more elegant manner.
