My /sys/class/backlight/ directory has no further items such as a
mbp_backlight subfolder:

$ sudo ls -aFl /sys/class/backlight/
total 0
drwxr-xr-x  2 root root 0 2011-04-23 02:21 ./
drwxr-xr-x 49 root root 0 2011-04-23 02:21 ../
$

I tested it and the hack doesn't work for me. I modified
/etc/X11/xorg.conf, rebooted, and the F1-F2 keys are still unresponsive:

$ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Section "Screen"
        Identifier      "Default Screen"
        DefaultDepth    24
EndSection

Section "Module"
        Load    "glx"
EndSection

Section "Device"
        Identifier      "Default Device"
        Driver  "nvidia"
        Option  "NoLogo"        "True"
        Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1"
EndSection
$
