I'm confirming this, and marking marking it as medium.

It is fairly common practice to boot kvm or qemu with something like:
 kvm -kernel /boot/vmlinuz-$(uname -r)

There are easy workarounds (downloading the kernel and extracting and
using it), but they're less than idea.
