Update - after pulling the latest packages, the problem has shifted
somewhat.

>From what I can tell, nouveau is now behaving itself more gracefully in
its failure to grab the nvidia chipset, and no longer interfering with
suspend/resume which is working perfectly now.

Here's what I get from nouveua in dmesg now:

Happy to close this bug and re-open a vanilla nouveau issue if required.
