I tried the same drive (PATA Drive: _NEC DVD_RW ND-3520AW, 3.07) with the same disc (ubuntu-10.04.2-server-amd64.iso) in another (but also NForce4 based) system. The problem appeared again and I fetched some logfiles. I also did a disc integrity check with this drive and disc and it again was successful.
