I have now tried Ubuntu Maverick Meerkat 10.10 and the boot-up goes flawlessly. There's no problem with the boot-up whatsoever despite manipulation of the grub(2).
After the upgrade one should be careful to watch for changes in one's grub settings and keep control over these.
