Had this happen again this morning and I checked to see if apt was stuck. Sure enough:
root 947 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? ZN Apr26 0:00 [apt] <defunct> That process can not be killed either, not even with -9. At least in my case I'm pretty sure this has to do with the automatic updates. For some reason apt gets wedged occasionally.
