Public bug reported:

Ubuntu Feisty Fawn Desktop CD

Upon attempting to install Feisty from a Desktop CD, I noticed that my
main hard drive that Edgy and Windows were installed onto successfully,
was represented as /dev/sda. I believe sd* means it is (detected as) a
SATA drive, while hd* means it is (detected as) a IDE drive. If this is
incorrect, please disregard this bug report.

To reproduce this bug (on my system):
  1. Boot into a Feisty Desktop CD
  2. Open up the terminal and type "sudo fdisk -l"
  3. See the hard drives that are detected

The output of the command "sudo fdisk -l" on my system under the above
circumstances is:

  Disk /dev/hde: 41.1 GB, 41110142976 bytes
  255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 4998 cylinders
  Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

     Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
  /dev/hde1               1        4079    32764536   83  Linux
  /dev/hde2            4207        4998     6361740   83  Linux
  /dev/hde3            4080        4206     1020127+  82  Linux swap / Solaris
  /dev/hde4            4999        4999           0+  83  Linux

  Partition table entries are not in disk order

  Disk /dev/sda: 20.0 GB, 20020396032 bytes
  255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 2434 cylinders
  Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

     Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
  /dev/sda1   *           1        2327    18691596   83  Linux
  /dev/sda2            2328        2434      859477+   5  Extended
  /dev/sda5            2328        2434      859446   82  Linux swap / Solaris

The hard drive is detected as "hda1" under Edgy.

If relevant: Feisty will install on my system onto sda1, but GRUB will
give error 17 when attempting to boot, so the system is unusable. I am
still trying to fix this problem.
