Now I also did my homework and read several bug reports (mainly on ubuntuforums and launchpad), and here s what I found: According to genodad in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.20/+bug/103379 upgrading to alsa-driver-1.0.14rc2 and alsa-lib-1.0.14rc2 fixed the problem on his side. I went onto trying this and I found that amixer not only show the modem controls (as before) but also the normal sound card controls (see the output of the same commands ran after the upgrade)
