Yup, python2.5. It ocurred to me that the rest of the problem could be fixed with a couple more symlinks, but I'm still sure that's not the "right" way to fix it. FWIW, I also removed and re-installed gdebi, and dpkg-reconfigure'd it with no improvement in behavior.
