Looking at the difference in the outputs above, it appears that "mplayer" used the "xv" driver while "gmplayer" used the "ws" driver. When I checked the "preferences" in gmplayer, the video driver was set to "gl2" - this is the config that creates the error. I changed the video driver of "gmplayer" to "xv" and the problem disappeared.
