Public bug reported:

After upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04, I was running into issues where if
I would open files with Chromium (downloads) or just gnome-open, no
matter what the file type was. A window would pop up stating that xpdf
was not found (I had removed it, but prior to removing it, it was
actually trying to open files with xpdf). After looking at what gnome-
open was doing, I removed xfce4 and then the problem was resolved.

The logs attached are after the xfce4 package was removed, but I had
reinstalled it and emultated the initial effects by choosing xpdf as the
default application to open files. Why it ever picked xpdf is beyond me
as it was working fine in 10.10
