I removed everything related to evolution in my home directory and killed gconfd, restarted and then I got contacts loaded. It took about 30 minutes. For a while everything seemed to work, although slow. But now the address book is dying again. Sometimes it just hangs. Maybe over 40000 entries in GAL is just too much for current implementation.
