Public bug reported: Binary package hint: apt
today I was trying to remove plymouth to solve a black screen during boot issue, and apt got me some pretty odd messages... first was about an Apache engine (apache2-mpm-prefork) being incompatible with another (apache2-mpm-worker) Of course they are, but why removing plymouth woukd trigger this? So I have tried to install the latter (apache-mpm-worker) which, of course removed the incompatible one automatically (apache-mpm-prefork) and a few php5 libraries with it... $ sudo apt-get remove --purge plymouth Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. The following information may help to resolve the situation: The following packages have unmet dependencies: apache2-mpm-prefork : Conflicts: apache2-mpm apache2-mpm-worker : Conflicts: apache2-mpm procps : Depends: upstart-job Depends: initscripts but it is not going to be installed E: Broken packages when I have tried it again I got this even stranger message about upstart-job and iniscripts ... but none should be affected or envolved with the plymouth package I was trying to remove. $ sudo apt-get autoremove --purge plymouth [sudo] password for leitao: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. Not sure what could happen if keep walking dows this path, but it seems that it will destroy my machine, so I gave up and reinstalled the packages I have taken out just in case is my packaging system broken beyond repair?
