Nevermind about the weird FUBAR problems under qemu... I had been
forgetting to use -m to specify how much ram to allocate and it seems
Ubuntu pukes all over itself these days with the default 384 mb of ram..
with 1gb of ram it runs smoothly and I am able to reproduce this no
problem.  Will look at the code when I get a chance; I'm sure it has to
do with sda16 having major number 8 instead.
